Which airports and ports in the UK do you ship to?
- Air: London Heathrow (LHR) is the main cargo airport. Manchester (MAN), East Midlands (EMA), London Stansted (STN), Birmingham (BHX), Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA) also handle cargo. Finnair flies direct from Helsinki to London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh; other airports connect in a European hub. We choose the routing by price, capacity and schedule.
- Road: full trucks (FTL), part loads (LTL) and trailers reach the UK through Central Europe and a Channel or North Sea ferry or the Channel Tunnel. Road works well for pallets and regular flows.
- Sea: Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway are the largest container ports. Tilbury, Hull, Immingham, Teesport and Grangemouth also have services from Northern Europe. Full containers (FCL) and smaller shipments (LCL) both work.

What the UK requires on the documents
Before shipping we check that:
- The consignee can import: it has a GB EORI number, and a UK customs broker files the import declaration. The consignee details are the same on the commercial invoice, packing list and air waybill or CMR.
- The invoice is complete: full goods description, commodity code, quantity, unit price, total value, currency, Incoterm, country of origin, gross and net weight, and the statement on origin when the buyer wants zero duty (see below).
- Controlled goods are covered: food, plants, animal products, chemicals, medicines and some other goods need pre-notifications, health certificates or licences under UK rules. Product safety marking (UKCA or CE) is the seller’s responsibility. The buyer’s broker confirms what applies.
- Wooden packaging is ISPM 15 treated and marked: the UK requires it for goods from the EU.
- Dangerous goods and lithium batteries are classified and packed under the IATA DGR for air or ADR for road before booking. Dangerous goods
- For road freight, the haulier needs the customs references in advance to cross the UK border. We pass them to the carrier.
Export from Finland
A shipment to Great Britain leaves the EU, so it needs an export declaration. Send us the commercial invoice, packing list and your EORI number. Dual-use goods need an export authorisation; for the UK many items can ship under the EU general export authorisation EU001, but you must register for it and follow its conditions. The EU’s “no re-export to Russia” contract clause does not apply to sales to the UK. Once the goods have left the EU, Finnish Customs confirms the export. Keep that confirmation: it proves the sale is zero-rated for VAT.
Northern Ireland is different: under the Windsor Framework it follows EU rules for goods, and shipments from Finland to Northern Ireland generally do not need an export declaration. Tell us if the delivery address is there.
The EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement
- Zero duty for EU-origin goods: goods that meet the TCA rules of origin enter the UK without customs duty. Being shipped from Finland is not enough; the goods must be made or sufficiently processed in the EU under the product-specific rule.
- Statement on origin: the exporter writes the origin statement on the invoice or another commercial document. For consignments over EUR 6,000 the exporter needs a REX number in the statement.
- Keep the evidence: the exporter must be able to show how the goods meet the origin rules, for example with supplier declarations.
- Import VAT is due in the UK in any case. VAT-registered importers usually use postponed VAT accounting.
Common problems on the UK lane, and how we avoid them
- No GB EORI or no broker on the UK side: the goods stop at the border or airport. We confirm the importer’s EORI and broker before booking.
- An origin statement for goods that do not qualify: the buyer may later face a duty bill. We recommend checking the product-specific rule before adding the statement.
- Missing statement on origin: the buyer pays duty it could have avoided. We check the invoice before shipping.
- Road freight without customs references: the truck cannot board or cross. We send the references to the haulier before departure.
