Cargo insurance for your shipments

Cargo insurance covers the value of your goods if they are lost or damaged in transport. It matters because carriers and forwarders are liable only up to set limits per kilo, which are often far below the value of the goods. We arrange cargo insurance through several insurers and choose the cover that fits the shipment, for air, sea and road freight, when you ask for it before the goods leave.

Why isn’t carrier liability enough?

Liability is limited by law and standard terms, for example:

  • Air: 26 SDR per kg under the Montreal Convention
  • Road: 8.33 SDR per kg under the CMR Convention
  • Sea: 2 SDR per kg or 666.67 SDR per package under the Hague-Visby Rules
  • Forwarder: under the Nordic NSAB 2015 terms

SDR (special drawing right) is an IMF unit, worth a little over one euro. For light, valuable goods these limits cover only a fraction of the value.

What does cargo insurance cover and cost?

Cover is usually “all risks” based on the Institute Cargo Clauses (A), with standard exclusions such as poor packing. The premium is a percentage of the insured value and depends on the goods, the route and the insurer; we quote it for each shipment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When must I order insurance?

Before the goods leave. Insurance cannot be added after damage has happened.

What do I do if goods arrive damaged?

Note the damage on the delivery receipt, take photos and tell us at once. Deadlines are short, for example 7 days for hidden damage under CMR and 14 days for damage in air freight.

Is insurance included in the freight price?

No. It is optional and quoted separately.
