Air freight from Finland to Europe

We fly cargo from Helsinki Airport to European countries regularly, typically in 1–3 days: urgent spare parts, production stoppages, high-value goods and shipments that cannot wait for a truck. Within the EU no export declaration is needed. For the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland we file the export declaration in Finland. When even the next flight is too slow, an on-board courier can carry the goods by hand, the same day when flights allow.

Which European airports do you fly to?

We ship to airports across Europe. Common destinations include:

  • Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS), Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Liège (LGG) and Brussels (BRU), the large cargo hubs of Central and Western Europe
  • Copenhagen (CPH) and Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) in the Nordics
  • Warsaw (WAW) in Central Europe
  • Madrid (MAD) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) in Southern Europe

Some cities get direct flights from Helsinki, others connect in a hub. On some routes the airline moves the cargo part of the way by truck under the air waybill. The quote shows the routing.

How long does air freight within Europe take?

Service Typical transit

What goes by air to Europe?

  • Urgent spare parts for machines, vessels and production lines, where a stoppage costs more than the freight
  • Aircraft parts for AOG situations. AOG air freight
  • High-value goods, such as electronics, instruments and samples, which spend less time in transit by air
  • Small, time-critical shipments that would wait for a full truck load on the road
  • Dangerous goods and lithium batteries, classified and packed under the IATA DGR. Dangerous goods

Customs: EU and non-EU destinations

  • EU countries: no export declaration and no customs clearance on arrival. For a VAT-free sale to a business, the buyer’s EU VAT number goes on your invoice.
  • United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland: outside the EU customs union. We file the export declaration in Finland; send us the commercial invoice, packing list and your EORI number, and any export licence for dual-use goods. The buyer’s customs broker clears import and pays local duty and VAT, unless the Incoterm says otherwise. Goods of EU origin can often enter duty-free under the EU’s agreements with these countries, if the invoice carries the right origin statement.

Air freight or road freight?

Air freight Road freight
Speed typically 1–3 days longer, depends on distance
Cost higher per kilo usually lower
Suits urgent, small, high-value goods heavy, bulky and non-urgent goods

For regular, non-urgent deliveries to Europe, a truck is usually the better choice. We quote both when it makes sense. Road freight

Common problems on European air shipments, and how we avoid them

  1. Missing the flight cut-off: the goods wait a day. We confirm the latest handover time when we book.
  2. Volume weight on light, bulky cargo: the price is higher than expected. We quote on chargeable weight and suggest road freight when it is cheaper.
  3. No export declaration for the UK, Norway or Switzerland: the goods stop on arrival. We check the destination and file the declaration in Finland.
  4. Undeclared lithium batteries in spare parts: the airline refuses the shipment. We ask about batteries before booking.

How it works

  1. Send the pickup address, destination, goods description, dimensions, weights and the arrival deadline.
  2. You get a price, routing and transit time, with road or on-board courier as alternatives if they fit better.
  3. We collect the goods and, for non-EU destinations, file the export declaration.
  4. You get the AWB number for tracking.
  5. The goods are delivered to the address, or the buyer collects them at the destination airport.

Typically 1–3 days from handover in Helsinki to the destination airport, depending on the route, flight capacity and cut-off times. Delivery to the final address is added in the quote.

Do I need an export declaration for air freight to Europe?

Not to another EU country. To the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland, yes, because they are outside the EU customs union. We file it in Finland, and the buyer's broker clears import at the destination.

Is air freight or road freight better within Europe?
